Service to the Community

Mason impacts its students, and our students impact the world.

The Mason graduate is an engaged citizen, a well-rounded scholar, and is prepared to act, to make a difference in the world.  Mason Impact is George Mason’s commitment to offer every student the transformative learning experiences that will help them become this Mason graduate. Mason Impact offers high-impact opportunities to all students, designed to develop problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills, and preparing them to make a real impact in the world.

At Mason Korea, students have many opportunities to engage in these kinds of transformative experiences. They engage in service learning, taking what they are learning in a class and apply it to support a community organization or goal. They have internships at NGOs. They learn about social entrepreneurship. They engage in various kinds of community service activities, from tutoring Korean multicultural high school students to providing delivering coal for winter heating in low socioeconomic neighborhoods. They participate and help shape Mason’s new five-year goal to pursue “Transformative Education through Anti-Racist Community Engagement.”

Perhaps no country more than Korea—with its high levels of educational attainment—understands that education is a social good as well as a private one, that a well-educated citizenry can, and must, give back to its community. As a public, US university, George Mason shares this understanding.  When our students give back to their communities and experience the rewards of that service, they not only enjoy enriched educational opportunities, but fulfill one of our central expectations and a state-funded educational institution.
