ENGH 302 - K03: Advanced Composition

English 302 is an advanced academic writing course and is part of the Mason CORE curriculum. The focus of English 302 is to help students become more comfortable with the style of academic discourse for their chosen field of study. In other words - this course will help you prepare and continue to practice for the kinds of writing that you can expect to encounter in your upper-level major courses. Since each major has different expectations and genres that students need to meet and understand, the assignments in this course will require students to immerse themselves in writing specific to their majors and to conduct research on topics that fit into their respective fields of study.

The major research project in this course is a literature review about a topic in your field of study or future profession. A literature review is a synthesis of published information about a very specific topic in a field of study - typically the student's major. The synthesis evaluates that information and discusses how it reflects a diversity of perspectives that address a particular “problem” or controversy about the topic. Quite often, literature reviews establish that there is a “gap” in the published information that proves there is a need for more research to better resolve the problem. Students might recognize this "gap" by another name - exigence. By establishing this gap, students will be better prepared to participate in academic discourse surrounding their chosen topic.
