ENGH 362: Global Voices is a course that studies cultures other than British or American in a comparative framework. This semester we will explore the modern and contemporary cultures of Korea, Japan, and, to a lesser extent, China by examining various cultural products, from literary texts (in English translation), and films, to artifacts of popular and everyday culture.
One of the thematic foci of the course will be the cultural interactions between the three East Asian nations. We will examine the shared as well as different elements of these cultures in cuisine, architecture, and religion. The other area of focus will be the modernization process in East Asia and the place of the traditional culture and its recreation in contemporary society.
This course satisfies the Global Understanding Mason Core Requirements and counts towards the Global Affairs MCC Concentration.
