This course is an introduction to U.S. American cultures. We explore contemporary issues facing American communities. These concerns include questions about identity, race, belonging, equity and social visibility. Moreover, we are approaching all topics in a spirit of respect, genuine inquisitiveness and celebration. We will explore these concerns in engaging class discussions, class presentations, community engagement and writing.  

INYO 105 K03 is reserved for Patriot Plus Program students.

This course provides an introduction to US cultures with a focus on diversity within U.S. American society. The course uses the concept of culture as a basis for discussing differences in Americans' experience of family life, work, education, the arts, national and ethnic identities, gender, religion and more. Through ethnographic readings, literature, film and field projects, students develop a better understanding of similarities and differences across the American experience. Limited to three attempts.
Mason Core: Global Understanding
Recommended Prerequisite: Multilingual students who have limited experience with US Cultures; INTO Mason Standard Year One Students.
