MK-IBK Covid-19 Emergency Fund

Through the generous support of the Industrial Bank of Korea, Mason Korea has established a special fund for students suffering extreme financial hardship as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

This emergency fund is available for Fall 2020 only, and students must submit an application to receive funding support.  To apply, students must meet all the qualifications for the Relief Grant and demonstrate evidence of extreme financial hardship (e.g. loss of significant employment, and limited alternative resources) as a result of the Covid-19 emergency.

Students who are approved will receive awards up to maximum of KRW 2 million.

The IBK-Mason Covid-19 Emergency Fund will provide financial support in addition to the Mason Korea Covid-19 Relief Grant and any other scholarships. All Mason Korea students including those studying on the Fairfax campus are eligible for this grant.

Students wishing to request support from this fund to help with the cost of tuition at GMUK must apply by July 31st, 2020.

Students wishing to request support from this fund to assist with other costs such as medical, books, meals, etc. can apply on a rolling basis. There is no guarantee that funding will be available for all applicants. The number of students who can be served by MK-IBK Covid-19 Emergency Fund is subject to the availability of funds. The MK-IBK Covid-19 Emergency Fund is not meant to provide long-term support beyond Fall 2020.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for funding, Mason Korea students must meet the following criteria: be currently enrolled as a degree-seeking full-time undergraduate at George Mason University U.S. or Korea campuses; and be experiencing unexpected financial hardship resulting from the coronavirus/COVID-19 outbreak.

 

Examples of Expenses Covered by Coronavirus/MK-IBK COVID-19 Emergency Funding :

Emergency medical and dental expenses 

Textbooks or technology equipment needed to ensure continuity of student's educational needs

Travel expenses, Homelessness, or sudden loss of housing

Overdue utility bills reaching a turn-off notice

Loss of childcare Health insurance

Tuition and fees related only to the fulfillment of payment plans for the fall 2020 semester

Other financial needs arising from individual and/or special circumstances to be determined on a case-by-case basis 

 

Examples of Expenses Not Covered by Coronavirus/MK-IBK COVID-19 Emergency Funding :

Legal fines or expenses

Non-essential personal bills

Parking tickets, library fines, or other expenses mistakenly incurred

Funds for the replacement of lost or stolen items 

 

Additional Items to Note

Because limited funding is available, requests made for expenses beyond the fall 2020 semester will not be considered.
Funds awarded do not need to be repaid; however, they may be subject to local taxes.
Funds awarded could be disbursed in one of the following ways: deposit to a student’s Korean bank account, via credit if the request is tuition related, or University staff will make an arrangement for a payment on behalf of the approved student.
The nature of the request will dictate how funding will be disbursed.

 

Application Process

Complete and submit the online application below. Applications will be reviewed by a committee comprised of Mason Korea staff. Decisions will be communicated to students via email within two weeks of submission.
