Section Information for Fall 2026
- This is a course for the Korean native speakers.
- This is a hybrid course where we meet only once offline + online assignments.
This course aims to foster Korean linguistic proficiency through Korean TV series, often called “Korean Dramas,” while learning about Korean culture. In this course, students will watch the episodes of the TV series “Lovely Runner (2024)” to learn how to critically analyze Korean dramas as cultural texts to understand Korean culture and society while refining their linguistic proficiency in Korean.
The course is aimed at students at the near-native or native level. Students will learn to write academic papers at the college level by writing research papers on Korean culture reflected in Korean drama as a team. Students will also learn how to present their papers in formal and academic settings as they prepare to present them at the K-Culture Conference.
Throughout the course, students will train themselves to observe Korean cultural practices as outside observers and think about their universal and particular aspects from a global perspective. Using drama as a text, students will explore how the drama reflects changes in Korean society and culture, such as changes in gender norms, family structures, power dynamics within relationships, and social prejudices related to people with disabilities. Students will gain a critical eye to observe changes in Korean society and culture as they build the K-Culture Archive and write research papers.
As their last project, students will produce Korean dramas as teams. Students will engage in creative writing as they write the script and learn how to collaborate and build ideas together with their teammates as they develop genre, characters, and storyline.
The course is designed for native or near-native speakers of Korean who are familiar with Korean culture, and the official language of instruction is Korean. International students who wish to take the course are strongly encouraged to discuss it with the instructor beforehand.
This is a hybrid section with face-to-face meetings and asynchronous online coursework restricted to native speakers of Korean.
