"Mason Korea has always been supportive towards students getting internships"

Mingyu (Mike) Kang was a management major at GMUK and graduated in Spring 2018. He is currently studying for the USCPA exam and hoping to work in an organization where he can use his knowledge and skills. Prior to studying for the exam, he worked at EY HanYoung at the PAS (People Advisory Services) department, Pacific City Bank’s SAD (Special Assets Department), and Incheon Port Authority’s Locks-Gate Operation division. Most of his work experience has been related to accounting or finance.

While working for the PAS department at EY HanYoung, Mike assisted staff members in preparing Composite Income Tax (CIT) statements for inbound and outbound clients. At Pacific City Bank, he collected and prepared legal documents for reclaiming collaterals and security deposits from Small Business Administration (SBA) loans while updating the client’s transcript of accounts. Lastly, while working at the Locks-Gate Operation division in the Incheon Port Authority, his main task was to organize all the IPA’s warehouse equipment data for preparing the company’s financial statement.

While studying at Mason, Mike was able to learn about corporations and their business environments, which helped him understand the objectives of the tasks and processes during his internships. However, what helped him the most were the MIS and IT courses, which taught him how to use office applications. For most of his internships, he obtained information from Mason's Career Development Services. "Mason Korea has always been supportive towards students getting internships as they highly encourage students to obtain work experience at earlier stages of their college career," he said. In particular, for his US internship at Pacific City Bank, Mason Korea’s staff members facilitated the communication process with the HR manager and the Office of International Programs and Services (OIPS) Department in Mason Fairfax to prepare the documents required for the Curricular Practical Training (CPT) working visa.

Mike highly recommends fellow students to consult Mason Korea’s Career Development Center (CDC) to aid their job search process. "The CDC provides great resources to prepare students to become more competitive in the job market such as revising their resumes and cover letters."
