Cancellation of 2020 Spring Convocation and Preventative Measures Against Coronavirus

Dear Mason Korea family,

George Mason Korea has been carefully monitoring the coronavirus situation in Korea. In response to Korean Ministry of Education guidelines, we are taking the following steps to protect the health and safety of our students.

Upon careful deliberation, and considering the developments of the novel coronavirus, we have decided to cancel this spring’s convocation event, scheduled for February 20.  We may consider holding a similar event later, once the threat of novel coronavirus transmission has subsided. Rest assured that we are thrilled to welcome all of our new students and will continue to celebrate our newest additions throughout the semester.

At this juncture, we anticipate beginning the spring 2020 semester on schedule and holding other smaller events, such as orientations, as planned. To ensure the safety and protection of our community, we will require the travel history of every student before the start of the semester.  Students whose travel history places them at risk of transmission of the virus will be asked to remain away from campus for a period of quarantine equal to two weeks since the return from the affected area.

We are currently stressing good health practices to lower the possibility of the spread of all communicable diseases.  Hand sanitizer and face masks will be available at any smaller groupings of students, including orientations.

Students who must remain away from campus will not be penalized for their absence, and their instructors and Mason staff will do all they can to support them during any period of quarantine. Detailed guidelines on quarantine measures and the use of IGC’s housing facilities will be provided by our offices shortly.

Thank you for your patience and support during this situation.  We are looking forward to seeing our new and returning students for the spring 2020 semester.

Yours in Patriot Pride,

Robert Matz
