President Gregory Washington has asked Interim Provost and Executive Vice President Mark Ginsberg to serve Mason as the university’s provost for a two-year term of appointment.
Provost Ginsberg’s extensive relevant experience played a significant role in Washington’s decision to extend Ginsberg’s tenure.
“Appointing Provost Ginsberg to a two-year term enables the university to benefit from his vast knowledge at this challenging time,” Washington said. “I’ll have greater continuity on my leadership team as well as a longer period to conduct a thorough search for his successor.”
The extension of Provost Ginsberg’s term brings stability to the Provost’s Office as other key leadership positions are filled. A national search is underway for the new vice president of research. Open positions for the vice president of academic innovation and new ventures and vice president of compliance, diversity and ethics are candidates for restructuring but will also ultimately be filled.
A national search for a provost will commence next year and conclude with the announcement of a permanent candidate for academic year 2022-23. Washington outlined his plan as part of his overall vision for Mason’s Board of Visitors at its annual meeting.
“One of the most gratifying aspects over the last few months has been developing collaborative relationships with our faculty, staff and students, and other university administrators,” Ginsberg said. “I look forward to the next few years as together we tackle the many challenges we face, as we seek to meet our needs and fill identified gaps while continuing to strengthen our university."
