George Mason University Korea to launch Computational and Data Science major in Spring 2021

George Mason University Korea, located at the Incheon Global Campus in Songdo, announced that it will offer the Computational and Data Science program starting Spring 2021. The new degree program will equip students to become comprehensive big data experts who meet the demands of today's job market in the era of the 4th industrial revolution.

Computational and Data Science is a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) degree that develops skills and knowledge in high demand across many industries. Mason Korea students who graduate from the CDS program will have the opportunity to secure a job in the US job market for up to three years after graduating from the US Fairfax campus.

The new program will be the first undergraduate major in science and engineering at the Korea campus. The degree will train students in data mining and analysis across a wide range of areas including climate and environmental science, cybersecurity, economics, geography, and urban planning. As an interdisciplinary program, it complements many of the other degree programs offered at Mason Korea, and will help students address the role of computation in the areas of ‘big data,’ implement the study in diverse fields, and ready themselves as convergent talents for the future market.

“We have been actively trying to launch the program at the Korea campus as Korea and other OECD countries continue to seek talented candidates equipped with skills and knowledge for the digitally intensive age,” said Robert Matz, campus dean of George Mason University Korea, adding, “We are confident that the Computational and Data Science major will help transform our students into the experts needed in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”

Professor Jason Kinser, Chair of Mason’s Department of Computational and Data Sciences, is likewise enthusiastic about the expansion of the program to Mason Korea. “The CDS department is excited about the opportunities proffered by the expansion of the CDS degree to the Mason Korea campus.” He adds, "maturation of this program will provide a suite of unique opportunities for collaboration with students on both campuses, and it will produce students with exclusive skills suitable for the next generation of science and business."
