Professor Soyoung Kwon Appointed as Member of Incheon’s Peace City Initiative Committee

Dr. Soyoung Kwon, Assistant Professor of Global Affairs, was recently appointed as a member of Incheon City’s Peace City Initiative Committee by Incheon Mayor Park Nam-chun. Kwon is one of four academic experts among 30 committee members.

Kwon also serves as Director of the Center for Security Policy Studies-Korea (CSPS-Korea) under George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government. After earning her Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Cambridge, Kwon worked as a research associate fellow at the East Asia Institute of Cambridge University, and later as a Shorenstein fellow at the Asia Pacific Research Center of Stanford University. She is an expert in comparative political science, peace and security in Northeast Asia, and public sports diplomacy, having served as a spokesperson for foreign correspondents at South Korea’s Ministry of Unification and as a Korea specialist and advisor on EU-Korea relations at the European Parliament in Brussels.

Kwon plans to contribute her extensive experience in diplomacy and politics to a potential “peace city Incheon” to strengthen inter-Korean exchange and cooperation in creating a border peace zone.

George Mason’s Center for Security Policy Studies is affiliated with the Schar School of Policy and Government, which boasts some of the best graduate programs in the U.S. in the field of homeland security. The Korea branch holds annual symposia to provide a platform for research and policy discussions on international security issues centered on Asia.

"I look forward to enhanced deliberation on the peace city initiative and policy recommendations on inter-Korean cooperation through CSPS-Korea’s various networks and the global perspectives provided by Mason’s Global Affairs and Conflict Analysis and Resolution programs," said Kwon. “I also think this is a good opportunity to promote Mason Korea’s distinct expertise and contribute to regional development.”
