Learning Beyond the Classroom: Computational and Data Sciences Students Visit K-Data

Mason Korea Computational and Data Sciences (CDS) professor Dr. Sohyun Park and 15 CDS students went on a field trip to the HQ of Korea Data Agency (K-Data), which Mason Korea signed an MOU with earlier this year.

The program provided a general introduction of the Data Safety Zone, which allows people to access private data, including health status data provided by the Military Manpower Administration. In addition, Mr. Junyoung Jung from LG Uplus, gave a special lecture where he shared about his experiences as a data analyst and provided practical advice about potential career paths in the data science field.

"I learned a lot on this field trip with Professor Park," said sophomore Minsoo Kim. "As someone who wants to be a data scientist in the future, I appreciated the advice on how to prepare for a data-related job from a leading data expert in Korea," he added.

"It was refreshing to get out of the classroom and have the opportunity to explore linkages between the classroom and the real world," said Dr. Sohyun Park. "By arranging field trips like this one and inviting guest lecturers in diverse roles across the data-related industry, I am planning to expand opportunities for students to have diverse experiences beyond their textbooks and computers," she added.
