Tell us about your career journey.

I have worked at the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism for 25 years. Throughout my career, I have worked in diverse policy domains, including culture, arts, content, and entertainment. I assumed my current position as director of the Korean Cultural Center Washington, D.C. in 2021.

What was the highlight of your Mason experience?

From 2007 to 2009, I pursued a Master of Public Policy at George Mason University, immersing myself in the study of various policy areas in the United States. During this time, I engaged in stimulating exchanges with various entertainment, cultural, and artistic institutions, such as the Smithsonian Institution, and delved into numerous case studies. This experience deepened my interest in fostering cultural exchanges between Korea and the United States, ultimately inspiring my return to Washington in 2021 to lead the Korean Cultural Center. For me, Washington, Virginia, and George Mason University hold a special place in my heart, as they have become a second home to me.

What is your career advice for Mason students or alumni who may consider working in Korea?

For alumni who aspire to pursue their careers in Korea, I urge you to approach the country with an open mind and take the time to fully immerse yourselves in Korean culture, emotions, and lifestyles. A deep understanding of the Korean concept of 'Jeong'—which encompasses notions of commitment, love, and friendship—can be a powerful asset in achieving a successful career in Korea. Moreover, the extensive network of Mason alumni in Korea can provide valuable support, so I encourage you to leverage this resource to its fullest potential.

What does the future hold for you?

As the director of the Korean Cultural Center in Washington, D.C. until 2024 and a cultural policy professional in the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism upon my return to Korea, I remain committed to expanding cultural and artistic exchanges between Korea and various countries. I warmly welcome any Mason alumni interested in the culture, arts, sports, and tourism fields to share their thoughts and opinions with me.
