State Senator Chap Petersen Introduces Mason Korea to Virginia Senate

Virginia State Senator Chap Petersen invited George Mason University President Gregory Washington, Mason Korea US advisory board members, and three Mason Korea students to the senate chambers last week to update the senate on the progress of Mason Korea. Petersen serves as the Chair of the US side of Mason Korea’s advisory board.

ChapSenator Petersen provided members of the senate with an overview of Mason Korea, sprinkling his remarks with Korean words such as "thank you" and "university."

"George Mason University Korea, which we approved in 2010, opened in 2014,” said Sen. Petersen, “has been growing significantly over the years with the number of Mason Korea students studying at the Korea and Fairfax campuses now nearing 1,000."

Sen. Petersen introduced President Gregory Washington and two advisory board members, Hyun Lee, Professor at the Washington University of Science and Technology, and Harold Pyon, Deputy Commissioner, Virginia Department of Labor and Industry. He also introduced Lori Scher, Assistant Dean for University Life at George Mason University, and the three students.

Senate

The three students present are Mason Korea student leaders currently studying at the Fairfax campus: Ilya Kim (BA, Global Affairs), Yu Hyun Sihn (MS, Conflict Analysis & Resolution), and Hyoeun Kim (BS, Management Information Systems). 

The Lieutenant Governor of Virginia Winsome Sears offered her welcome greetings to the group and thanked them for being there. "I am grateful that George Mason University is operating an international campus with Incheon City," said Governor Sears, applauding the group along with the senators in attendance.

Hyun Lee also provided the group with a brief walking tour of the Capitol building and the grounds after the session.
