Mason Korea student Ilya Kim (Global Affairs, ’23) has been honored with the distinguished Peter N. Stearns Global Citizenship Award. Kim was honored with the award at the recent commencement ceremony held at the Fairfax campus after completing his one year of study there. He is the second student from Mason Korea to receive this prestigious award.
The Peter N. Stearns Global Citizenship Award was established as a legacy to Mason's former provost, Dr. Peter Stearns, in honor of his commitment to global affairs and the success of GLOA students. Dr. Stearns also played a key role in the establishment of Mason Korea.
From the moment Kim set foot on campus as a freshman, he showed an exceptional drive to learn and make a positive impact on the community. Throughout his undergraduate journey at Mason Korea, he served in various leadership positions such as Student Council President, Resident Advisor, and as an intern in different units.
Kim’s commitment to service and leadership flourished further during his time at the Fairfax campus. All the while, he excelled academically, graduating with honors as a testament to his achievements.
While Kim’s future path may currently be uncertain, his determination to work with underserved communities in Russia and earn a Ph.D. in Sociology with a focus on education and restorative justice remains unwavering. Expressing deep gratitude towards the Mason Korea family, Kim says, “My diploma may say George Mason University, but I will always consider Mason Korea my home campus.”
“I would like to especially thank the University Life team, and Professors Soyoung Kwon and Deborah Kwak with whom I had the privilege of working closely,” said Kim. “My story at Mason may be coming to an end, but I am not saying goodbye. My doors are always open to support Mason family and students.” He can be reached on LinkedIn or via email at ikim2205@outlook.com.
