I feel privileged to be part of the George Mason University Korea community. As a member of the Advisory Board, I am aware of all the academic successes and opportunities taking place on campus. It is a great time for GMU Korea.
Horace Mann, a pioneer of American public schools in the 19th century, famously called “education is the great equalizer.” I believe this to be true, and it is one of the main reasons for my giving to the GMU Korea scholarship fund. Irrespective of one’s gender, ethnicity, nationality, and socioeconomic status, higher education has the power to transform lives and communities. Giving back to the community is also an important driver behind my giving. It is a way for me to express my duty, as it were, being part of the community here in Korea.
I was recently involved with a fundraiser for a large project. An important message I shared with potential donors was that the amount wasn’t as important as their own desire to give and support the initiative. Some donors can make large gifts, but the power behind the aggregate amount of small gifts matters just as much.
Knowing that my gift may contribute towards a student’s academic success at GMU Korea encompasses the reasons behind why I give.
