Mason Korea Welcomes New Faculty for Spring 2024

Miriam Ahmed

What are you teaching at Mason Korea?

I'm teaching two graphic design courses within the GAME design program. In AVT 180 Intro to Creative New Media, we'll be exploring AI art and other emerging technologies and methodologies for creative expression. In AVT 311 Graphic Design Methods and Principles, we'll explore typography, layout, and UI design tools and processes (beginners and everyone welcome, I can override the prereq if needed!).

What is your favorite part of teaching?

The phone call/text/email I receive from my former students right after they land their dream jobs or some major project or deal with industry elites. Seeing my students succeed is the best reward of this job.

What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?

It was quite an honor to deliver the Beatrice Ward Memorial Lecture on typography for the St. Bride Foundation in London, which is traditionally delivered by a notable female in the type industry.

Coffee or tea?

Chocolate milk!

What’s your favorite part about being in Korea so far?

The 50 million restaurants within walking distance from campus, and oh! Joseph Oh, our IT guru, is my favorite indispensable resource so far.

Edgar Castro Mendez

What are you teaching at Mason Korea?

I'm teaching ECON 103 Microeconomic Principles and ECON 306 Intermediate Microeconomics.

What is your favorite part of teaching?

I have a passion for economics, and it brings me joy to witness students applying economic concepts to understand social issues and integrating economics into their professional paths. I hold a special appreciation for those who go on to become policymakers.

What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?

I like to work on real-life issues and with concrete policy implications. I am proud of my work on tax and procurement policy issues in Latin America.

Coffee or tea?

As a Colombian, I naturally appreciate good coffee, but I also enjoy tea. My favorites are oolong and jasmine teas. Additionally, I'm a big fan of the tea shops in southern China.

What’s your favorite part about being in Korea so far?

I like Korean food and the public transit system in the city.
