Briefly introduce yourself.
Hi, my name is Chiwon Song. I majored in Accounting at GMU Korea and graduated in 2021. I am currently working as a junior consultant at Deloitte Korea.
Can you share a memorable experience or highlight from your time at GMU?
One of my most memorable experiences at GMU was joining the dance club, GBounce. I had a great time practicing routines with fellow members late into the night and performing in front of hundreds of people during the campus music festival.
Can you share your career journey and how your experience at GMU prepared you for your career?
I work as an IT specialist—a role that requires knowledge in both accounting and information technology. What I appreciated about the coursework at GMU was that it allowed me to study not only traditional accounting but also IT-related subjects such as databases, IT controls, and audit software. These courses provided a strong foundation that has helped me perform professionally at an accounting firm.
What advice would you give to current Mason Korea students or recent graduates?
My advice is: “Don’t spread yourself too thin by trying to do too many things at once.” There will be times when you’re tempted to start something new even before finishing your current task. Even if you have extra time, I strongly recommend focusing on what you’re already doing. Once you’ve completed what you planned for today, take a break—save your energy for tomorrow.
In my case, I was working on Goal A and thought it was nearly complete, so I started on Goal B. But later, I realized Goal A wasn’t actually finished, and I had to go back and spend more time wrapping it up. If I hadn’t rushed into Goal B, I could have saved a lot of time and energy.
Remember the saying: “It’s not over until it’s over.”
What are your future career or personal goals?
My future goal is to expand my career opportunities by working at a Deloitte office in the United States and obtaining a CPA license within the next five years. I’m also interested in the field of intellectual property (IP) audit, which involves assessing the value and risks of intangible assets. As these areas continue to grow more complex and important, I believe there will be a greater need for professionals who can help organizations make informed decisions. Becoming a specialist in IP audit is another exciting career path I’m considering!
