Mason Korea Students Explore Global Legal Issues on Jeju Island

Mason Korea’s new collaboration with Jeju National University Law School came to life this fall as a group of 20 students and faculty traveled to Jeju Island for the “Global Issue Legal Resolution Learncation Program,” held in October.

The three-day program followed an MOU signed this summer and was led by Omario Kanji, Associate Professor and LLM Program Coordinator at George Mason’s Scalia Law School, who coordinated the academic sessions in close partnership with Jeju Law School.

Three LLM students, 16 undergraduates, and one faculty member participated, gaining exposure to global legal challenges, comparative law, and international legal education. A highlight of the program was a series of lectures by JNU’s Director Sojeong Ahn and Oxford Law Professor Matthew Dyson.

“The quality of his lectures was exactly what I’d expect from Oxford,” said Jiyu Seo (Conflict Analysis and Resolution, sophomore), who added that her only regret was not having more time with Professor Dyson.

For many students, the experience broadened their understanding of the field beyond the classroom. “Both the lectures and networking expanded my understanding of comparative law,” said Chaehyun Lee (Business, freshman).

“We are deeply grateful to Director Ahn of Jeju Law and Professor Dyson of Oxford Law for their generosity in creating such a unique experience for our students,” said Kanji, adding, “It was an honor to accompany our enterprising students as they explored new career pathways and comparative legal perspectives. We look forward to returning and building on this exciting collaboration.”

The Jeju National University RISE Center will host a Results Sharing Conference and student essay contest early next year, further strengthening this growing partnership.
