Jayoung Sung (BA in Global Affairs)

Could you briefly introduce yourself? (your major, graduation year, and current role)

Thank you for the interview opportunity. My name is Jayoung Sung. I majored in Global Affairs with minors in Communication and Marketing, and I graduated in Fall 2022. Currently, I’m working at Mason Korea as an Administrative Assistant in the Office of Faculty Affairs.

What is one of the most memorable experiences you had as a student at Mason Korea?

Although I have many cherished memories, making it hard to choose just one, I can confidently say that my time at Mason Korea was a truly life-changing experience. During my university years, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to take on various leadership roles, and those experiences were incredibly meaningful to me. I believe that developing soft skills is just as important as academic learning. By stepping up to leadership challenges and actively engaging with my peers, I gained valuable lessons that have become a strong foundation—not only during my time at Mason Korea and at Fairfax, but also as I continue to grow and navigate adulthood.

As both an alumna and now a staff member, what unique sense of fulfillment do you find in your role?

October marks the month I began working as a staff member at Mason Korea, and as I’m doing this interview, it has been exactly one year. Since I started, I have witnessed firsthand the growth of Mason Korea. Working closely with our faculty members, I have come to deeply appreciate the efforts and dedication of the professors.
In my role within Faculty Affairs, I find great fulfillment in believing that Mason Korea can provide more academic research opportunities to our faculty, which in turn contributes to offering high-quality education and better career prospects for our students. It’s especially rewarding to see faculty and staff working together toward this shared goal.
As a university that continues to grow, I look forward to even more opportunities emerging in the future.

Having experienced Mason both as a student and as a staff member, what do you think is Mason Korea’s greatest strength?

Mason Korea’s greatest strength is undoubtedly its “global” spirit. Students studying here have the opportunity to develop an international mindset, which benefits them not only in their careers but also in their personal lives. Even though I’m still on my journey, I firmly believe that my experiences at Mason have laid a strong foundation for my growth. Growing up in South Korea, I was often shy and hesitant to take the lead, but the “global” spirit of Mason Korea has broadened my perspective and helped me transform my way of thinking. I hope to continue growing with Mason Korea, building on the experiences I’ve gained here.
