Abstract: Over the past few decades, economists have used twins and other pedigree data to study the relative influences of genetic and environmental factors on economic preferences and outcomes. Recent technological advances now make it possible to study specific genetic variants. Though early attempts have proved disappointing, recent studies exploiting large datasets have made major inroads in elucidating the genetic and environmental underpinnings of economic traits. This presentation will summarize recent findings from large-scale studies of the genetics of educational attainment and risk tolerance and discuss their implications as well as how these may be of use to applied economists.
