Mason Korea Holds Fourth Annual Beach Cleaning Day

Mason Korea held its fourth annual Beach Cleaning Day at Yeongjong Island, Incheon, in collaboration with the University of Utah Asia Campus this past Saturday morning. The event brought together 48 students, faculty, staff, and family members from both universities.

Leading by example, Mason Korea Campus Dean Robert Matz, Associate Dean of University Life Angela Kang, and Associate Dean of Finance and Administration Jim Pait actively participated, rolling up their sleeves to clean up trash along the local beach.

Part of the Mason Cares program, Beach Cleaning Day displays Mason Korea’s ongoing commitment to the environment through the eco-friendly practice of "plogging," a combination of picking up trash while walking or jogging.

"I had a really fun time today—I enjoyed getting in between the rocks to find trash and discovering new items,” said freshman Trey Irizarry, a Global Gateway student visiting from the Fairfax campus. “I used to volunteer often as a Boy Scout but haven't had the opportunity in a while. This is my first community service activity since then and I'm happy to participate," he added.

"We are pleased and proud to be able to participate in the annual plogging,” said Campus Dean Robert Matz. “We will continue to engage in activities that not only improve the environment in Incheon, but also provide an enriching experience for students, and a great way for students, faculty and staff to interact with one another,” he added.
