Mason Korea Holds Panel Discussion with Fairfax Campus to Celebrate Black History and Women's History Months

Mason Korea began the month of March with an online panel discussion featuring Professors Alexia Arthurs and Kyoko Mori in celebration of Black History and Women's History months.

Both professors are creative writing faculty at George Mason University and are published authors. Professor Alexia Arthurs is the author of the short story collection How to Love a Jamaican (Ballantine, 2018). Dr. Kyoko Mori is the author of three nonfiction books (Yarn; Polite Lies; The Dream of Water)

Mason students, faculty, and staff across the US and Korea campuses joined the online panel titled “Author, Woman of Color,” which also bridged last fall’s Mason Reads Program to this semester’s program.

Dr. Shannon Davis, Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs at Mason Korea, opened the session by framing the discussion and moderated the panel. She invited the panelists to describe their experiences of becoming an author.

Professors Arthurs and Mori discussed how their positionality has framed their work, and how that has changed over time. They also shared their insights on the importance of women of color's voices as authors across genres.

The session concluded with a vibrant Q&A session with online participants.
