Tell us about your career journey.

I graduated in May 1998 with a degree in Economics. After graduation, my initial plan was to find a job in Korea. However, due to the challenging job market following the IMF crisis, I ended up securing a job in the United States first. I worked as an insurance agent for about a year before joining Daishin Securities in 1999. It was a time when the securities market was experiencing a downturn, resulting in increased hiring. I spent 15 years in the international finance and sales department at Daishin Securities.

In 2014, I decided to venture into a new role related to ESG (a measure of a company's behaviors with respect the environment, external social relationships, and its own internal governance) at the Daishin Economic Research Institute. Despite being a complete newcomer to the ESG field, I learned a great deal during my time there. Until July 2020, I served as the head general manager at the Daishin Economic Research Institute. Recognizing the strong alignment between ESG and shareholder issues, I made a career move to Morrow Sodali, where I currently hold the position of managing director. My primary focus within ESG is governance.

What was the highlight of your Mason experience?

During my time at George Mason University, I had the privilege of meeting individuals from diverse cultures, which naturally broadened my perspectives on diversity and openness. Without even realizing it, I held certain preconceptions and biases, but attending George Mason University helped me develop into a more open-minded person, which became a valuable asset in my current leadership position.

What is your career advice for Mason students or alumni who may consider working in Korea?

Working or studying abroad alone does not hold significant merit in today's job market. It is crucial for individuals to deeply reflect on their true passions and how the knowledge and skills they acquired at George Mason University can contribute to their careers. Instead of solely relying on the available job postings, new graduates should proactively seek jobs or even internships beyond the advertised positions. Don't hesitate to take the initiative by reaching out directly to companies or organizations that interest you! By showcasing your proactive attitude, you can increase your chances of finding a fulfilling career opportunity!

What does the future hold for you?

Now with 20 years of career under my belt, I am happy with my role as a managing director at Morrow Sodali. While I don't have any specific plans for the future, I am open to new beginnings and I am ready to embrace new challenges that may arise along my career journey.
