ENGH 362: Global Voices is a course that studies cultures other than British or American in a comparative framework. This semester, we will explore the modern and contemporary cultures of Korea, Japan, and, to a lesser extent, China by examining various cultural products, from literary texts (in English translation) and films to artifacts of popular and everyday culture.
One of the course's thematic foci will be the cultural interactions between the three East Asian nations. We will examine the shared, as well as different, elements of these cultures in cuisine, architecture, and religion. The other area of focus will be the modernization process in East Asia and the place of traditional culture and its re-creation and appropriation in contemporary society.
This course counts towards the Global Affairs MCC Concentration.
