This course aims to foster Korean linguistic proficiency through Korean TV series, often referred to as “Korean Dramas.” In this course, students will watch the episodes of the TV series, “Extraordinary Attorney Woo (2022)” and “Kill Me Heal Me (2015)” to learn the real-life language expressions and the specific cultural context they are used. Students will learn new expressions to understand short video clips in class and will learn how to apply these expressions through discussions. Students will also be able to learn and think about Korean culture embedded in the drama that could not be taught in the general language textbooks. The course promotes proactive learning for students by training them to do self-study while watching Korean media.
As a term project, students will produce a Korean drama as a team. Students will be trained to come up with the drama script throughout the semester by creating skits with the new expressions they learned. Students will be grouped with students whose Korean language level is above intermediate-high to work together to produce the drama. There will be drama workshops that will guide students step-by-step. All workshops will be done in Korean which will provide an immersive educational experience for students to speak Korean. These activities will help students to foster speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.
The course is aimed at students at the level of intermediate-high or low-advanced. Students should have taken KORE 202 or higher to take this course. The official language of instruction is Korean. Students whose level is above the intermediate high will be given the option to give presentations on Korean culture embedded in Korean dramas instead of taking the exams. These students are supposed to contact the instructor at the beginning of the semester.
