Mason Korea (119 Songdomunhwa-ro, Yeonsu-gu, Incheon, Korea), #G101/#G106
The Mason Reads program starts with a common book for incoming freshmen, infusing the book into academic classes and co-curricular programming. The 2021 Mason Reads book is The Undocumented Americans by Karla Cornejo Villavicencio.
So often we only hear stories of DREAMers or DACA recipients who have done extraordinary things. In this book, Villavicencio writes about migrants in a way they’ve never been written about before—in all their complexity, messiness, humanity, and beauty. Villavicencio uses the power of poetry and storytelling to give an inside look at the lives of undocumented people in a way not meant to inspire, but to tell their stories and so others can better understand the everyday lived experiences of undocumented Americans. Villavicencio graduated from Harvard University in 2011 and was one of the first undocumented students to be accepted.
Just like your peers in Fairfax, you are invited to be a part of the discussions around this important topic in your classes and also in a series of events in April. Please find more details below:
- April 13 (12-1PM, G101): Meet the Author Screening - We will watch a pre-recorded interview with the author and exchange our thoughts around the interview and the book
- April 18 (12-1 PM, G106): Talk Event on the Undocumented- Mason Korea community members including students, faculty, and staff who can talk on behalf of the undocumented, will participate as our panels and share their (or families' or friends') stories. We will have a short Q&A after the dialogue session.
- April 27 (12-2 PM, G106): "The Home" Documentary Screening- We will watch the documentary "The Home", a story about the immigrants in the US, and will have a short Q&A and discussion session. (Limited to 100 participants.)
