May 18 Gwangju Uprising: Gwangju Trip

This is an all-day excursion to the Southern city of Gwangju. This would be an experiential learning opportunity for our students, faculty, and staff to explore the site(s) of one of Korea’s most important protest movements of the late 20th century. The Gwangju Uprising or May 18th Movement developed in the aftermath of the assassination of long-time Korean dictator Park Chung Hee in 1979 and subsequent military coup led by Chun Doo-hwan in December of 1979.

Visiting Gwangju will allow students to explore the spaces where this movement developed and its lasting legacy on the city of Gwangju and the Republic of Korea. This trip will be of interest to anyone interested in social movements, modern Korean history, and the ongoing struggle for global democracy.

*Transportation, breakfast, and dinner are included. Lunch will be on your own as we explore one of the sites in town.
**RSVP is first-come, first-served, as seats are limited to 30 people!
