MK Way

MK Way program, a conditional admission for George Mason University in Korea, is a language program designed for students who are non-native speakers of high school or full college (transfer) grades, but are not well prepared for English. During the semester, students at MK Way will only intensively study English courses to advance to American universities, and students who earn credits of B- or above in all subjects will be officially admitted to our PPP curriculum. Students who pass the MK Way program are selected through an in-depth screening process by the admissions office in Korea and admission results will be notified individually.

Entry Requirements

Those who meet the academic requirements but have slightly lower ENLP (English Language Proficiency) scores required for the PPP or Direct admission to Mason Korea.

 

Program Components

  • Students take the following three courses.
  • The hours in parentheses are the total number of hours spent in classroom instruction per week in that class.
  • AE 040: Level 4 Core (10 Hours) 

Focuses on reading and writing in academic settings.  Develops comprehension and retention of modified academic and informational tests and writing a variety of academic essays on concrete and abstract topics.  Covers vocabulary and grammar at the CEFR B1+level. Designed for non-native English speakers at a high –intermediate level in written skills. 

  • AE 041: Level 4 Oral Comm Skills (6 hours)

Focuses on listening and speaking skills in academic and social settings. Introduces note-taking and develops short formal presentations, conversation management, functions, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation at the CEFR B1+ level. Designed for non-native English speakers at a high-intermediate level in oral skills. 

  • AE 056: Business English (2 hours)

Focuses on listening and speaking skills in academic and social settings. Introduces note-taking and develops short formal presentations, conversation management, functions, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation at the CEFR B1+ level. Designed for non-native English speakers at a high-intermediate level in oral skills. 

 

Progression into the George Mason University Korea

Students who successfully meet the requirements of AE at the end of the program, earning B- or better in all three courses will progress into the Patriot Plus Program (PPP) at George Mason University Korea. In the case that a student does not meet all the requirements for progression, the student may take the TOEFL, IELTS or Versant and earn minimum score of 69 TOEFL, 6.0 IELTS, and 52 Versant (minimum scores for subsections) to gain PPP admission to the university.

 

Deferral Policy for MK Way Program

Due to the nature of the MK Way program as both English language development and academic English preparation coursework, students are not allowed to take a leave of absence while they are in the program, nor able to defer their entry of program. All students are required to take the full course load (3 classes) for the full semester in order to complete the program.
