Dr. Seohye Kwon is an Assistant Professor in the English Program at George Mason University Korea. She received her Ph.D. in English from Louisiana State University, where she taught first-year and advanced composition courses for four years. Her teaching emphasizes critical reading and writing while drawing on her research interests in race, gender, Asian American literature and culture, and Korean popular culture.
Current Research
Her research broadly explores the possibilities that emerge from transnational approaches to reading and writing. Currently, she is interested in the transnational public sphere that Mason Korea students participate in as they engage with American academic and public genres while addressing issues situated in diverse local and global contexts. Through the lenses of race and gender, she also explores the intersection of Orientalism and Techno-Orientalism in Asian American and Korean literature and film. In particular, she examines representations of Asian bodies as both caring and robotic, and how Asian/American cultural texts engage with these racialized representations to imagine new possibilities for care, relationality, and Asian subjectivity.
