Economics: ECON 398 - Internship
Students must register for ECON 398 with the Office of Academic Affairs to receive up to 3 hours of credit for an economics-related internship. For more details, please refer to the syllabus attached to the online application.
General Questions
Enrollment is limited to juniors or seniors who have completed ECON 103, ECON 104, and at least 6 upper-level hours of economics coursework (e.g. ECON 306 and ECON 311).
Students must have an overall GPA of at least 2.5 and an economics GPA of at least 2.5.
For further discussion about eligibility, please contact the course instructor.
Students are responsible for locating their own internship (by working with the Career Development Center, for example) and there must be some economic content to the job.
Students may not use a “regular job” as an internship. The internship must be a new short-term opportunity to work with a private firm or public organization to learn something about the field.
Credit cannot be awarded for an internship retroactively – students must be enrolled in ECON 398 and working as an intern at the same time.
Students can register for 3 or 6 credits of ECON 398. At Mason Korea, we offer a 3-credit ECON 398 course for the students. 3 hours of credit can be earned for an internship of at least 17 hrs per week for 8 weeks/135 hrs total. We discourage internships of fewer hours than that. (College minimum standard is 45 hours for one credit.)
This course is a variable credit course, which means students can choose the number of credits within the approved range. You must only register for the number of credits you are approved for by your instructor. Please look at the demo and adjust your credits during registration process.
Registration for this course follows an atypical process. Before registering, you must find an internship and come to an agreement with the workplace sponsor. You should then submit the online application.
Once the course instructor has approved this documentation, you will be granted permission to register. Each student must complete the required paperwork in full. Please be sure to leave ample time to complete the required work before the deadline to add courses.
Apply through an online application system with the required documents before the deadline. The priority deadline is February 9, 2024. For further inquiries on the deadline, please contact your course instructor.
This is a pass/fail course and students are evaluated based on three components:
- An initial 300-word proposal submitted in the online application.
- An Employer Evaluation Form- completed by the employer.
- An 800-word reflection paper that is due on or before the last day of finals.
For more details, please obtain a copy of the current syllabus for this course from the course instructor.
