Korean Studies: KORE 490 - Internship in Korean Studies
KORE 490: Internship in Korean Studies offers working opportunities for students who are pursuing either the Minor in Korean Studies or the Major in Concentration in Korean, Foreign Languages to engage with the real Korean speaking world. Students can work at local schools, social service programs, government agencies, media productions, Korean transnational corporations, NGOs, or any interest groups in Korean-speaking regions. Student interns need to complete assigned work at the internship site and need to complete academic assignments. The assignments vary depending on the number of credits.
Application Process
- Submit your CV in English and cover letter in Korean to Hyang Lee (hlee52@gmu.edu).
- If you meet the eligibility, you will be invited to an interview with internship advisors.
- If approved, you will be assigned to an internship site, and details will be given to you by your for-credit internship course instructor.
- Fill out the online application (link available below) and required documents PRIOR to the start of the internship.
- Upon approval of your application, you will be given an override by the course instructor to register for the for-credit internship course.
- Complete the registration by register for the course on the Patriot Web.
General Questions
Enrollment in KORE 490 Internship in Korean Studies is open only to students who have:
- Students who are pursuing either the Minor in Korean Studies or the Major in Concentration in Korean, Foreign Languages.
- Completed a total of 75 college credits.
- Successfully completed KORE 202 and one 300-level KORE core course in the KORE major or minor.
- Overall GPA of 2.5 or above.

Students can register for 3, 6, or 9 credits of KORE 490 Internship in Korean Studies. At Mason Korea, we offer a 3-credit KORE 490 course to the students who are pursuing either the Minor in Korean Studies or the Major in Concentration in Korean, Foreign Languages. Three credits can be applied toward the major in Korean or the minor in Korean Studies; credits beyond the first three will count as upper-division electives. The required assignments are below:
- 3 undergraduate credits:
- Work a minimum of 135 hours over a minimum of 8 weeks
- Meet with faculty internship advisor two times
- Write learning objectives and specific plans for achieving objectives before starting the internship
- Write a daily journal documenting the work experiences
- Write a final paper (portfolio)
This course is a variable credit course, which means students can choose the number of credits within the approved range. You must only register for the number of credits you are approved for by your instructor. Please look at the demo and adjust your credits during registration process.
All students who are enrolled in KORE 490 must work the requisite number of hours and submit a timesheet to the KORE 490 course instructor. Students also need to submit the following assignments.
Three Credit Internship
- Participation and engagement (Workplace Evaluation) 60%
- Midterm workshop 10%
- Final presentation 10%
- Final report (portfolio) 20%

Submit your CV and a cover letter to Prof. Hyang Lee (hlee52@gmu.edu) by last Friday in November of the previous year for Spring terms and by last Friday in May for Fall terms to start the application process.
