Mason Korea Debate Society Competes in First International Tournament

The Mason Korea Debate Society, founded this spring, recently made its international debut at the 2025 Shanghai International Debate Open (SIDO), a highly competitive tournament in the British Parliamentary format.

Over six rounds, the six-student team, steadily improved, learning from each match, adapting to international standards, and refining their skills. “Our first international debate tournament served as an important milestone—it showed us how much we need to grow and helped clarify the direction we want to take,” said Yesong Oh, a junior majoring in Conflict Analysis and Resolution.

By analyzing the Open Division Grand Final and engaging with teams from around the world, students gained valuable insights into argument construction and strategic debate techniques. “Sharing such a competitive stage with accomplished international debaters was both inspiring and motivating,” Oh added.

“I’m incredibly proud of our students for exceeding expectations—even placing first in one round against tough competition,” said Hansol Kim, Community Relations Coordinator and debate team coach. “Whether they joined Mason Korea through PPP, MK Way, or had strong English skills, all students showed growth. Even our novice teams performed impressively, and I hope this experience helps everyone build confidence and go further.”
