This class aims to enhance students’ cross-cultural communication and leadership skills through literature-centered community activities. Students will spend the beginning weeks reading and discussing literary texts and planning various literature-based group activities. Then, students will participate in literature-centered projects, off campus, for several weeks. In the final weeks, drawing upon the weekly journals of their activities, students will write a short narrative about the experiences and lessons learned. This will help students create stories that can be included in their job portfolios and/or presented during interviews.
This semester, students will participate in the literature-centered cultural exchange project run by the Incheon Office of Education. In this project, a mixed group of university students (half Korean and half international students) visits schools in the inner city (원도심, won-do-sim) to lead a communal reading of literature and literature-based activities. On completion of the project, students who have fully participated will be given monetary awards by the Incheon Office of Education. This is an invaluable opportunity for students. Students will earn an official record to demonstrate their unique strength in working across cultures and their leadership experience. For students from Fairfax, this will give them a rare opportunity to have a highly credible on-ground experience in Korean society.
This is an enrollment-controlled course. Because the community engagement activities are official programs run by the government, the seats are limited. If interested, please contact Professor Hyunyoung Cho at Mason Korea.
ENGH 300-K01 enrollment is controlled. Please contact Professor Hyunyoung Cho (hcho23@gmu.edu) for permission to register.
