MGMT 303 - K01: Principles of Management

Course Description

MGMT 303 K01 provides students with learning opportunities to explore fundamental theories and concepts of management by examining the nature of managerial work across various business models and within rapidly changing business environments. Core managerial functions—planning, organizing, leading, and controlling—are analyzed in the context of contemporary organizations. In this course, you will take on the role of a manager and practice this role within an organizational setting. You will have the opportunity to develop managerial competencies through in-class case discussions. As part of the experiential learning component, you will assume the role of Board of Directors (BOD) members and participate in BOD meetings to make key decisions for power generation companies in Korea.

MGMT 303 K01 Course Objective

Course objective is to provide you capability to:

  1. Discuss the process of managing organizations, kinds of problems, and issues which contemporary managers face; to acquaint you with the principles and models used by management to deal with these issues and problems.
  2. 2. Explain, in particular, the management functions of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling and to identify their contribution to management of organizations.
  3. Articulate the role of managers in organizations.
  4. 4. Describe the organization as a total dynamic system that interacts with its environment.
  5. Compare theoretical approaches of management discussed in classes with how management is performed by managers in actual organizations.

Credits: 3

Examines managerial work under range of business models. Managerial functions and activities including planning, organizing, balancing conflicting demands, leading and controlling are examined in depth and in context of current organizational examples. Discuss variety of pressures contemporary managers face. Notes: Students cannot receive credit for both MGMT 301 and MGMT 303. Costello College of Business students will not be permitted to make more than three attempts to achieve a C or higher in MGMT 303. The third attempt requires Costello College of Business academic advisor approval. Those who do not successfully complete this course within three attempts will be terminated from their concentration and will not be eligible to receive a degree from the Costello College of Business. Recommended Prerequisite: BUS 103 and BUS 200.

Students with a class of Freshman may not enroll.

Non-Degree level students may not enroll.

Students with the Ineligible to take MGMT crses or terminated from BC major attributes may not enroll.
