This course is a 3-credit semester program for intermediate students of Spanish who have already taken SPAN 201. The course continues the development of the four core language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—with increased emphasis on accuracy, fluency, and complexity. Students will explore more advanced grammar (including compound tenses, the subjunctive mood, future and conditional forms) and broaden their vocabulary related to real-world and abstract topics such as future plans current events, the environment, social issues, and cultural identity. Authentic materials—such as music, videos, articles, and short fiction —will be used to enhance comprehension and engagement with the Spanish-speaking culture.
The course objectives are:
• Comprehend and produce more complex spoken and written Spanish using a wider range of grammatical structures (present perfect, future perfect, conditional, subjunctive).
• Write short compositions, opinion essays, and personal narratives with improved coherence and grammatical accuracy.
• Expand vocabulary to discuss more abstract and thematic topics beyond daily life (news and current affairs).
• Engage in sustained conversations on familiar and some unfamiliar topics, express opinions, justify choices, and respond appropriately in a variety of contexts.
• Develop strategies to recognize more complex real-life situations, such as expressing disagreement, making hypotheses, giving advice, and debating ideas.
• Understand different aspects of Spain and Latin America culture and society.
• Discover the festivals, traditions, daily life, food and monuments of the Spanish speaking countries.
