Dr. Junghwa Kim is a Term Assistant Professor in the Department of English at George Mason University Korea. She is an applied linguist specializing in multilingual writing, writing theory and practice, and graduate research writing. Prior to joining George Mason Korea in the Spring 2025, she had extensive teaching experience on teaching First-Year Composition, graduate research writing, and TESOL courses at universities in the US and South Korea. After her doctoral study, she taught academic writing, thesis/dissertation writing, and advanced research communication to undergraduate and graduate students as a lecturer at the University of California, Irvine and an instructor at Arizona State University.
Her research areas include designing writing curricular for multilingual learners and effective teaching practices for Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) and Writing in the Discipline (WID), advancing methodological and theoretical approaches in various EAP classrooms. She has presented her research work at major international conferences and served as an organizing committee at American Association of Applied Linguistics and Symposium of Second Language Writing.
Current Research
Her research examines effective pedagogical approaches for multilingual learners and advances both practical approaches and theoretical frameworks in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) contexts. She is particularly interested in developing research writing strategies using multimodal approaches, designing writing curricula for Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) and Writing In the Discipline writing, and exploring learning transfer among advanced multilingual learners. Additionally, her research addresses issues in World Englishes and the role of AI in academic writing.

Dr. Kim earned her Ph.D. in Linguistics/ Applied Linguistics from Arizona State University specializing in multilingual writing. She holds a M.A. in English Linguistics and TESOL from Korea University and a B.A. in English Education, and a B.A. in Human Ecology Education from Korea University in South Korea.
