Sehyun Jeong, 2018

Sehyun Jeong (Business, ‘18) always dreamed of becoming a CEO one day. After earning her BS in business in 2018, she is now the founder and CEO of Colours, a web and mobile app development company.
Jeong entered Mason Korea as a management major with the vision of starting her own business in the future. After graduating, she planned to launch a travel application with a business partner whom she met during her internship at Pfizer. Unfortunately, the pandemic hit and thwarted her plans.
However, as they say, when one door closes, another opens. While looking for a new business item, Jeong found that the web and app development field had a high demand for entrepreneurs. In fact, the pandemic had amplified the importance of the industry. Jeong went for the opportunity and eventually founded Colours in the summer of 2020.
“My business courses and the startup club that I founded at Mason Korea provided a foundation for me to lead my own company,” said Jeong, adding, “In particular, the practical HR-related examples I studied in Professor Leo Jung's class and the Xiaomi case study we looked at in Professor Vias Nicolaides’ class helped me ask the right questions and make smart choices when running my company.” She also credits government subsidies for youth startups for helping commercialize her business idea through financial support.
Jeong also talked about her business journey at a recent Incheon Global Campus career workshop featuring CEO alumni. She encourages current students to challenge themselves as much as possible while in school as it is the best place to try new things and make mistakes.
To future entrepreneurs at Mason Korea, Jeong advises: “Diving in and planning ahead are two keys to building a startup. Balancing between the two is very important. You can’t make a business magically happen with planning only, but you also shouldn’t start a business without a detailed plan. You’re never fully ready to become an entrepreneur, so keep pushing yourself by leveraging all the resources available at school.”
