Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) is a federal law that governs the educational records of eligible students. It grants students continuous access to their educational records upon request, allows students to amend their records if they feel they’re inaccurate, and restricts how and when their educational records can be disclosed.
When a student turns 18, or attends a post-secondary institution, FERPA rights belong to the student, not the parent. This means all students at Mason control access to all of their educational records and must give consent before that information is disclosed to any third party, including parents. The best way for families to stay involved and informed about their student’s progress is to communicate directly with the student. Students seeking to give consent to release information to a third party should fill out this form and submit it online. FERPA authorizes the release of Directory Information in accordance with what is allowable under law.
Mason does not release non-directory information unless a student has provided consent, the release is to the parent of a dependent student, as required by § 23.1-1303.B.5 of the Code of Virginia, or the disclosure meets a qualified exception under FERPA.
At Mason, Directory Information includes:
student name, address, date and place of birth, telephone number(s), email address, major and field of study, class, enrollment status, dates of attendance, degrees conferred, awards and honors, previous institutions, participation in officially recognizes sports and activities and physical characteristics of athletes.

가족교육권리 및 개인정보법 1974(FERPA)는 해당 학생들의 학사 기록을 관장하는 연방법입니다. 이 법은 학생들이 자신의 학사 기록을 요구하면 지속적으로 열람할 수 있도록 하고, 기록이 잘못되었을 경우 수정을 요청할 수 있도록 하며, 언제 어떻게 자신의 학사 기록이 공개될 수 있는지 제한할 수 있습니다.
학생이 만 18살이 되거나 혹은 고등 교육 기관에 재학하게 되면, FERPA에 대한 권리는 부모님이 아니라 학생에게 귀속되게 됩니다. 이것은 조지메이슨대학교에 다니는 모든 학생들이 자신의 학사기록에 대한 접근을 통제하고 그 정보가 부모님을 포함한 어떤 제 3자에게도 공유되기 전에 학생이 동의해야 함을 의미합니다. 가족들이 학생이 학교에서 어떻게 지내고 있는지에 대해 알고 참여하는 가장 좋은 방법은 학생과 직접 이야기하는 것입니다. 제 3자에게 정보를 공유하는 것에 동의하는 학생은 이 양식을 작성하여 온라인을 통해 제출해야합니다. FERPA는 디렉토리 정보를 법에서 허용되는 한까지는 공개될 수 있도록 하고 있습니다.
조지메이슨대학에서는 디렉토리 외에 다른 정보들을 학생의 동의 없이 제공해드릴 수 없습니다. 버지니아 주법 23.1-1303.b.5 조항에 따라 학생의 부양가족인 부모에게 공개되거나 FERPA의 예외사항이 충족이 되는 경우는 제외 됩니다.
디렉토리 정보는 다음을 포함합니다:
학생 이름, 주소, 생년월일 및 출생지, 전화번호(들), 이메일 주소, 전공과 연구 분야, 수업, 재적 상태, 출석일자, 수여 학위, 수상 기록, 과거 재적기관, 사진, 공식 스포츠 및 활동의 참여 여부 및 운동선수의 신체적 특징.
