Advising
Academic Advising is Key
Advising is always important, but it is even more so when Mason Korea students pursue an accelerated master's program. The principle is to plan on spending your 7th and 8th semesters in Fairfax and take graduate-level courses during that time. However, your academic plan at the Fairfax campus can influence the academic plan at the Korea campus. For example, there may be certain pre-requisite courses you need to take at the Korea campus to be ready for accelerated master's program, or you may change your courses you take at the Korea campus in order to make room for graduate-level courses at the Fairfax campus. Do not wait until you apply for the accelerated master's program. It is a good idea to contact your advisor as early as your first semester as an undergraduate.
A few questions that students should explore when meeting with their advisors are:
- How should I establish my four-year course plan to make room for graduate-level courses during my senior year?
- Are there pre-requisite courses I need to take at the Korea campus to be ready to take advanced courses at the Fairfax campus?
- What are the benefits of pursuing an accelerated master's degree, especially as they relate to their major and career plans?
- How can students connect with faculty in the department to learn more about the graduate program focus and overall expectations?
- Are there students in the program who could offer advice?
- How would this impact overall graduation timelines? For example, will summer classes be necessary if anticipating graduate courses in senior year?
- How should remaining major requirements be planned so that the workload will be manageable?
Connect with your advisor to discuss your plan for the BAM program.
