Academic Advising Appointment Policy (Undergraduate)
Please read the Academic Advising Appointment Policy below carefully before scheduling an appointment with your advisor.
Academic Advising Appointment Policy
Students must use their official Mason Email account when seeking advice through email. United States federal privacy law and Mason policy require that any communication with a student-related in any way to a student's status be conducted using secure Mason systems.
When e-mailing an advisor, please include (a) your first and last names, and (b) your G-number. Advisors can answer quick questions via email. If your questions require extensive advising assistance, the advisor may request that you schedule an appointment.
Appointments with advisors are scheduled for 30 minutes by default. If you expect to need more time, you should explicitly request extra time with the advisor when scheduling your appointment. To schedule an appointment:
- Click “Find My Advisor” to select the appropriate advisor based on your advising needs.
- Log in using your George Mason credentials and schedule your appointment.
- For step-by-step instructions, please refer to the Scheduling an Appointment Guide.
- Write down questions that you have in advance, and bring the questions with you.
- Bring a pen and paper and be prepared to take notes as needed.
- Bring any other supportive or necessary documents relevant to your appointment.
- If preparing for course registration, review your major’s four-year plan and check course availability at Patriot Web, then draft a list of courses and bring the draft with you.
If you need to cancel your advising appointment, please do so in advance by logging into Patriot Connect and following the instructions provided here. Canceling in advance allows other students in need of advising to use the available time slot. Please note that failing to show up without canceling may affect your ability to schedule future appointments. For more information, refer to section #6: No-Show Policy.
If you are late to your advising appointment by 10 or more minutes and appear before the conclusion of your scheduled appointment, the advisor may, at his or her own discretion, choose to either advise you, or require you to reschedule your appointment.
If you do not arrive before the end of your scheduled appointment and fail to notify your advisor in advance, your absence will be recorded as a “no-show.” After two (2) no-shows, you will be restricted from scheduling any new appointments for two weeks through the scheduling system. To avoid disruptions, please be sure to cancel your appointment properly and in a timely manner.
